Keep your fledglings close and follow your passion

Hi Reader,

A long time ago, I missed my calling as a theatre kid. I was 7 years old. A cringingly shy child. I decided I wanted to try out for the local theatre company's production of Cinderella. I auditioned. I got passed up. BUT, days later, they called back. Apparently my audition form had gotten stuck to another one. I actually did get the part. But at that point, I'd moved on already. The calling had vanished. The shyness had overtaken me again.

Anyone who has worked with me or attended my workshops knows I was meant for the stage, lol. Okay, maybe not... but a performer in my heart, I do declare I am. Always a ham in our old family videos on VHS. Always putting on a show when in public. No one believes me when I tell them I have anxiety, because I act as though I don't. Even when my insides are trembling, my hands are shaking, I put on a show.

The show must go on!

Have you ever had that moment when you are so sure of something you throw your entire being into it and essentially become obsessed? Like, fully body, all encompassed, devoured by it?

That happened to me about a week ago.

I was struck by the idea that I must write a play. N

o… not just a play… a mother lovin’ musical.

And the idea is so strong it has basically written itself across my heart, in my mind, and took up residence in my soul.

I also learned the important lesson of keeping my fledgling ideas to myself until I’m well into the work.

Have you ever shared an idea with someone that was near and dear and a piece of your soul, only to have them be like “okay cool. So about that TPS report…”

There’s an important lesson there. Keep your baby ideas close. Talking about them before they're ready is a sure fire way to dispel the, well, spell they have over you. Especially when you don't get the response you expect.

The reason is this: No one can see what you envision inside your head. When an idea is in this fledgling state, it doesn't have wings yet. It's just a wee baby bird, freshly hatched. As you sputter and ramble through your idea that so far is really just a spark, you may feel like, oh man, this isn't as good as I thought... The magic may vanish.

If you make this mistake, don't let the magic fade.

Something my students learn in Writing From the Top of Your Head(r) is this:

When the muse (source, higher creative powers, whatever you want to call them) speak to you: LISTEN.

Even if it is something so different than what you typically write or are comfortable with. When those creative higher powers send you something just give it a chance.

You never know what might happen.

You might spend over $300 on keyboard and multiple books about writing plays and operas… 🙋🏼‍♀️🫣😅 (hi... it's me).

Claire 💛

P.S. I'll be taking the rest of May off to explore this new and unexpected calling. Maybe longer… 👀 TBD!

Baby bunnies eating by a green evergreen bush

Hi Reader, There are currently four baby bunnies living in the bush in my front yard and every time I see them, I squee with delight and sit and watch them, slowly dying from cuteness overload. 🥹 Baby bunnies eating. That's all they do is eat. And scatter. The bunnies scatter the second they think there’s a threat. Yesterday, a truck rumbled down the road behind the house and the bunnies fled to safety inside the bush. Their instincts are strong. Fast forward to probably a week or two from...

Hi Reader, From hotdog flavored whiskey to IKEA’s meatball lollipops, we cannot trust the internet on April 1st. I have been working hard for the past 3+ months getting a new quiz up and running. This one uses 100% my own IP (instead of borrowing from Jim Henson). I spent hours drawing graphics for each result, days designing the dossier style results pages that actually look like files from an archive. I obsessed over the questions, logo for the fictional agency, all of it. I was so excited,...

Hi Reader, Since I’ve asked so much of you lately, I’m keeping this one short and sweet. I have a few things to share that I think you just might love. If it’s cold right now where you live, this amazing soup will warm you right up! (Warning: it is 100% not fat free, which is probably why it is sooooo yummy). A fun little break from the daily grind (xenials will adore this) This inspiring article for writers (very on fleek with what I’ve been talking about of late… do people still say, on...
